  Interesting discovery: I have TiVo Desktop running on my win7 laptop, and transfers work flawlessly.

  I've just setup a permanent "server" using XP, that I can leave on all the time (in my garage) but movies transfer with no sound.

  I suspect this is a codecs problem, so I've installed a codec pack to see if that resolves it, if not I upgrade to win7 I guess

  problem solved .. I hadn't open windows media player EVER, so hadn't been through the "activation" (genuine advantage) bollocks
